Celestron 9.5x44 EDMfr: J-B56 (No J-E mark) Date: circa 1990's AFOV: ~57 degrees TFOV: 6.0 degrees, 315 feet at 1000 yards Eye Relief: ~18mm Prisms: high index This is a unique binocular. It appears to use the same extra low dispersion (ED) objective as the Swift Audubon 8.5x44ED. However, it has a higher magnification and the eyepiece design is different. It is marked as "Fully Multicoated". The image has excellent color correction and is very bright. The moderate field of view has low distortion and is very well corrected, with just a small amount of softness at the edge (though not as sharp at the edge as the Nikon 10x42SE). The better than usual eye relief and fold down rubber eyecups allow for use with glasses. Although the two piece rubber coated body does not appear rugged, it does makes for a lightweight glass. When it was available, the 9.5x44ED was very reasonably priced (~$300) for such excellent performance. For a time after it was discontinued, a version of this binocular was available from Eagle Optics. Note that there was also a 6.5x44ED available from Celestron, which I have not examined. |
